The AirPods Max are in preparation at Apple and the headphones could abandon its Digital Crown for touch controls. In any case, this is what a new patent obtained by the company suggests.
Touchscreen with Apple’s next headset?
The patent alludes to a headset (the AirPods Max in this case) that has touch controls on the outside. Users could activate Siri, change music, answer calls, manage the volume and more with their finger. Currently, all these manipulations are done using the Digital Crown.
As Patently Apple points out, this isn’t the first patent Apple has obtained for touch controls on the AirPods Max. It is actually the fourth. But the fact that the manufacturer is getting one “regularly”, and still getting one today, strongly suggests it’s something brewing for the next generation of the headset.
You should know that the idea of a touch surface has already been explored by Apple. Indeed, during the launch of the current model which saw the light of day at the end of 2020, the design team had indicated in an interview that they had finally chosen the Digital Crown for the marketed product. But nothing says there won’t be a change with the AirPods Max 2.
It is currently difficult to say when the AirPods Max 2 will be available. Previous rumors had spoken of a 2021 release, but that didn’t happen as we can see. For 2022 then?
