Apple abandons the Touch ID reader project under the screen

The iPhone would ultimately never be entitled to a Touch ID fingerprint reader under the screen. After developing a functional sensor, Apple would have decided to bet everything on Face ID facial recognition. The brand would also have planned to hide the modules necessary for its operation under the touch screen of its future iPhones.

Touch-ID

With the iPhone X, Apple ditched the Touch ID fingerprint reader in favor of Face ID. The facial recognition system was quickly deployed on most iPhones from the brand’s catalog. Only the more affordable iPhone SE retains a fingerprint scanner below the screen, in a wide border.

Last year, multiple rumors suggested that Apple was planning to slide the Touch ID scanner under the touch screen of its iPhone 13. Faced with the generalization of the mouth mask against Covid-19, Apple would have imagined this solution as alternative unlock method, in addition to Face ID. It was finally nothing. However, Apple would have tested iPhone 13s equipped with a fingerprint reader under the screen shortly before the launch of mass production.

On iPhone, Apple will bet everything on a Face ID under the screen

According to information from the specialized site iDropNews, Apple would finally abandoned its Touch ID fingerprint reader project under the screen. Citing “sources close to the matter who wish to remain anonymous”the site claims that Cupertino engineers have not been working on this technology for a few months.

On iPhone, Apple now wants to bet everything on Face ID facial recognition. To overcome the constraints of the health crisis, the brand has also made corrections to the functioning of facial recognition on iOS. With the iOS 15.4 update, Apple is indeed allowing unlock your iPhone with your face while wearing a mask. De facto, the firm no longer needs to develop a Touch ID under the screen.

Still according to iDropNews, the Silicon Valley giant is more interested in a way of hide TrueDepth sensors, essential for the operation of Face ID, under the touch screen. Apple would have considered inaugurating this technology, which removes the notch and the hole in the screen, with the iPhone 13, advances the site.

Finally, the manufacturer preferred to temper the appearance of the front sensors under the screen in order to refine its solution. According to the site, the first iPhone whose Face ID sensors and the sensor for selfies will be hidden under the screen would be iPhone 15 Pro. Expected at the end of 2023, this future iPhone should therefore sport a 100% borderless screen. While waiting for other leaks to corroborate the assertions of the site, we invite you to take this rumor with hindsight.
