Apple explains that the “Tap to Pay on iPhone” feature will be launched in the United States later this year and will allow merchants to accept contactless payments through supported iOS applications, simply by using an iPhone XS or a version. later. When paying, the merchant will simply ask the customer to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch (Apple Pay), contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the recipient’s iPhone and payment will be made in securely using NFC technology.
Currently, merchants wishing to accept contactless payments on an iPhone must rely on additional hardware such as Square Reader, which works wirelessly or via a Lightning link.
Stripe will be the first payment platform to offer “Tap to Pay on iPhone” to its enterprise customers, including Shopify, with more payment platforms and apps coming later this year. Apple Stores in the United States will also launch the feature in the coming months. Apple hasn’t mentioned the arrival of this feature in other countries either, but a first deployment will probably begin in 2023.
