According to Trendforce analysts, Apple’s upcoming AR headset can only be used through a monthly subscription.
Current predictions are that Apple’s first AR headset will cost between $1,000 and $3,000. However, to be able to use it, it is likely that the company will need an additional monthly subscription. According to Trendforce, the “commercial market is currently dominated” by HoloLens 2. The company predicts that “strong shipments” of Oculus and Microsoft devices “will likely force Apple to release its product this year”, in order to “join the competition”.
Apple will likely target the commercial market and adopt a HoloLens pricing strategy. What does it mean ? This means that the device will cost a few thousand dollars, but compared to the competition, there will also be a monthly subscription.
Currently, HoloLens 2 is sold by Microsoft as a one-time purchase. Sometimes other companies rent it or buy it in installments. There are also subscriptions involving HoloLens 2, but they are all for third-party apps. For this reason, Trendforce assumes that Apple wants to follow the same strategy as the third-party developers of HoloLens 2, requiring a subscription to use the apps.
For now, take this information with a grain of salt, as these are just rumors. Also, while Apple is notoriously a company that makes consumer devices, chances are its first AR/VR headset will be aimed at businesses.
