After VoLTE, Free Mobile announces the availability of Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi) for its customers. As the name suggests, this allows calls to be made using the Wi-Fi network.
Setting up Wi-Fi calls at Free Mobile
This system is especially interesting for people who pick up poorly indoors, for example in houses. With VoWiFi, the call goes through the Wi-Fi network instead of going directly through the operator’s 2G/3G/4G/5G antenna. It is a transparent operation for the customer, he does not need to use a specific application and his telephone number is always the same.
In the case of Free Mobile, Wi-Fi calling is therefore in place from today. The operator’s Twitter account dedicated to the network partthat you must have a 5G plan to take advantage of it, that is to say the one at € 19.99 / month. Then, the feature is activated by default for those who have subscribed to a package since November 2021. For those who have a subscription that was subscribed earlier, you must manually activate the service by sending the word volte by SMS to 1337. This choice may come as a surprise knowing that we are talking here about VoWiFi and not VoLTE.
As it stands, the service is available with OnePlus smartphones that are already eligible for VoLTE at Free Mobile according to Univers Freebox. On Xiaomi smartphones, open the Phone application and then dial *#*#869434#*#*. You can also dial *#*#4636#*#* to verify that it is active. As for Samsung and other manufacturers, Free says it is working to make support available.
As a reminder, Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom already offer Wi-Fi calls, and have been for a while now.
