Despite this negative figure, Apple still increased its market share and its lead over Samsung. In total, Apple shipped 17.5 million iPads in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to 19.1 million in the same quarter of 2020, a decrease of 8.6%.

The first explanation is related to the tablet market which, after the boom of 2020 due to various confinements around the world and many other people forced to work and study from home, slowed down especially in the second half of the year. Looking at the fourth quarter alone, the market fell 11.9%, with Samsung and Lenovo posting bigger losses than their competitors. Samsung, for example, lost 21.6% year-over-year.

Explanation ? The tablet market as a whole fell 11.9% and major rivals Samsung and Lenovo saw much larger declines in shipments. Samsung’s shipments were down 21.6%, while Lenovo’s year-over-year decline was still higher at 25.4%. In the fourth quarter of 2021, 46 million tablets were shipped, with IDC expecting a significant increase in the coming months.

Apple achieved a 38% market share in the quarter, compared to 15.9% for Samsung in second place. Taking into account the whole of 2021, Apple leads with 34.2%, while Samsung reaches 18.3%.

According to IDC, many users preferred iPads for their versatility and seamless compatibility with other Apple products.
