According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the increase in size of the bump that houses the rear camera system of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is due to the brand new 48-megapixel camera systems .
In a tweet, Kuo responded to the recently leaked patterns shared by Max Weinbach. The diagrams showed that the rear camera bump of the iPhone 14 Pro models will increase by approximately 5% in each dimension, from a width of 35.01mm to 36.73mm and a height of 36.24 mm to 38.21mm. It also increases the thickness, which will make it protrude further from the device, from 3.60mm on the iPhone 13 Pro to 4.17mm on the iPhone 14 Pro.
Kuo said the “main reason” for the increase in size is due to the upgrade of the “rear camera to 48MP”. He added that the diagonal length of the iPhone’s Contact Image Sensor (CIS) will increase from 25 to 35 percent when it upgrades to 48 MP. Also, the height of the camera lens system will increase by 5-10%.
iPhone 14 Pro: 8K videos are coming
The 48MP camera system is expected to be limited to iPhone 14 Pro models and enable 8K video recording, offering a significant upgrade over the iPhone 13 Pro 12MP camera and 4K video recording capabilities. Even high-resolution 8K videos recorded with iPhone 14 Pro would be suitable for viewing on Apple’s AR/VR headset.
Kuo has previously said he believes the camera quality of the iPhone 14 Pro models will “take cellphone camera photography to a new level.”
Along with replacing the notch with a new pill + piercing design, the 48MP wide-angle camera is one of the most cited features of the iPhone 14 Pro. The latter has been mentioned several times by Kuo, Taiwanese research firm TrendForce and analyst Jeff Pu.
