iPhone 14: the 120 Hz screen finally reserved for Pro models

Apple is due to release four iPhone 14s this year and only the Pro models will have the right to the 120 Hz ProMotion screen, according to Ross Young. This analyst specializing in screens is very well informed in the field.

In a tweet, Ross Young says China’s BOE Group will be a supplier of LTPO OLED displays for non-Pro iPhone 14s, but notes that the company doesn’t have enough production capacity to meet Apple’s demand enough and be able to offer a 120Hz display. Samsung is currently the exclusive supplier of OLED LTPO displays for the iPhone 13 Pro models, while a rumor from last year indicated that LG would also start manufacturing OLED LTPO displays in hope to deliver them to Apple this year.

The ProMotion display on iPhone debuted in 2021 with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. This allows a variable display rate up to 120 Hz. The adjustment is made automatically according to what is present on the screen to avoid significant consumption and therefore limit the impact on autonomy.

In 2022, only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have the right to the 120 Hz screen. Ross Young thus contradicts Jeff Pu, another analyst who recently mentioned the availability on the four models of 2022. Ross Young is much better informed than his colleague when it comes to screens, so we tend to trust him.
