iPhone, record sales also in India!

After China, Apple also manages to conquer the smartphone market in India after years of difficulties.

iPhone sales, India

iPhones had the strongest quarter ever in India, with Apple shipping around 2.3 million units in the last three months of 2021. The 34% year-over-year increase tells us that Apple is finally making progress in India, which is one of the largest smartphone markets in the world, but also one of the toughest for those selling high-end devices.

Despite these numbers, iPhone sales are still lagging behind Android rivals. Samsung shipped around 7.2 million units, while Xiaomi shipped 9.3 million devices. Apple’s market share also remains stable at 5% in India, despite the increase in sales.

However, Apple’s fourth-quarter revenue eclipsed the competition precisely because of the higher average price of iPhones. The Cupertino company reported $2.09 billion in revenue from iPhone sales in India, higher than Samsung’s $2 billion in revenue.

“This is a game-changer for Apple in India”said Neil Shah, head of research at Counterpoint. “Indians were willing to spend money on premium phones during the pandemic because everyone’s life revolved around their devices and there was nothing else to spend”.

Apple has struggled to gain a foothold in the growing Indian market for years, mainly due to its prices and lack of retail stores. The company has worked hard to secure tax refunds from the government, also through large investments to start iPhone production in the country. All of this is now paying off.
