In a new report from Strategy Analytics, Apple posted record growth for Macs in the fourth quarter of 2021. The company shipped 6.6 million MacBooks, an 11% year-over-year growth from the fourth quarter of 2020.
Apple was the fastest growing PC vendor, behind Dell which grew 14% year over year. Industry analyst Chirag Upadhyay said the overall laptop market saw another quarter of growth due to the continued increase in the number of companies adopting a hybrid workplace.
“It was another strong quarter for laptops, ending another good year. Continued demand for hybrid workspaces has supported market growth, also driven by attractively priced Windows 11 and DaaS offerings. Emerging markets are driven by continued demand from small and medium-sized businesses as consumers continue to turn to mobility. Additionally, orders were processed late in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter of 2021 due to component shortages and supply issues. »
Eric Smith, director of connected computing devices (CCD), said Windows has overtaken Chromebooks in terms of growth over the past quarter.
“We saw a slowdown in demand for Chromebooks in the second half of 2021. Demand for Windows, however, took off in the fourth quarter of 2021. Windows 11 retail updates gave Windows laptops strong momentum during the quarter in all the regions. Microsoft also attracted major PC vendors with the launch of Windows 11 SE for K-12 education. Windows also remained the popular consumer choice as demand for gaming laptops continued throughout the holiday season. »
Apple attributes recent growth in the Macbook lineup to the release of the Apple Silicon family of processors and the redesigned MacBook Pro that was released this fall.
