no Touch ID under the screen at Apple before at least 2025

While most iPhone owners have been waiting years for the return of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, it won’t be back on Apple smartphones until at least 2025.

According to the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple should not adopt Touch ID on the screen on its iPhone 14, 15 and 16. According to his information, Apple reportedly rejected the idea of bringing back the fingerprint sensor, which had nevertheless contributed to making the brand very popular a few years ago. The American giant would therefore not align itself with Android with a fingerprint sensor under the screen before at least 2025.

If you are nostalgic for the fingerprint sensor, you will therefore have to switch to an Android smartphone or opt for the iPhone SE 5G: the only recent model in the range that still offers Touch ID on its Home button just below the screen. It is also the cheapest 5G model that Apple offers, since it is only offered from 529 euros in France.

No Touch ID at Apple, Face ID does its job well

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple would be very satisfied with its only biometric solution on iPhones: Face ID. This had some problems at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as it could no longer identify users, but Apple finally rolled out the feature on its recent IOS 15.4 update. This new version has received fairly mixed feedback because of its impact on the autonomy of certain models, but finally brings iPhone owners a solution so they don’t have to type in a passcode anymore every time they wear a mask.

The analyst didn’t give a specific reason why Touch ID wouldn’t arrive in an Apple device in 2023 or 2024. Unfortunately, Ming-Chi Kuo’s report seems to confirm that Apple has indeed abandoned the Touch ID reader project under the screen. Apple would have chosen to focus on its Face ID 3D facial recognition technology, of which the sensors could well pass under the screen in 2024 with the iPhone 16. We will have to wait several more years before knowing more about this.
