Patent: Apple could remove crown from Apple Watch

The crown of the Apple Watch is a fairly outdated part of Apple’s smartwatch, like a mechanical watch reminder. If we are to believe an Apple patent recently filed with the US Patent Office (USPTO) this small physical component could soon be replaced by an optical sensor capable of detecting user gestures at (short) distance!

Removing the digital crown would save space inside the case, which could benefit other essential components, such as the battery for example (the Apple Watch is not a battery life model, we can always dream). Admittedly, this is only a patent, but the latter still seems quite probable in view of Apple’s pronounced taste for ultra sober design (“less is more”).
