Apple is offering the 4C165 firmware this evening, which concerns both AirPods 2 and AirPods 3, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. All headphones are now at the same level when it comes to updating.

4C165 firmware is available for different AirPods

AirPods 2 and AirPods Max previously had version 4A400. For AirPods Pro, the firmware was 4A402. And for AirPods 3, the software version was 4B66.

The story is identical to previous updates: Apple does not communicate the list of changes and other bug fixes. So it is hard to know which firmware 4C165 brings to different pairs of AirPods.

You can check which version is installed. Go to Settings> General> Information, go down and select your AirPods. The installed firmware version is located in the “Internal program version” line.

How to force the update to be installed

How to update my AirPods? Officially, Apple does not offer a solution. Downloading and installation are done automatically in the background. But there is a technique used by the Genius in Apple Store to force the download, here it is for AirPods (Pro):

  • Make sure AirPods are within Bluetooth range of their iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device
  • Listening to music or other audio content with AirPods for at least 30 seconds
  • Put the AirPods back in the charging case and close the cover
  • Connect the charging case to a power source via Lightning
  • Wait 30 minutes and above all do not open the case during this period otherwise you will have to start over

And the one for AirPods Max:

  • Make sure AirPods Max are within Bluetooth range of their iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device
  • Check that the battery life of its AirPods Max is greater than 20%.
  • Listening to music or other audio content with AirPods Max for at least 30 seconds
  • Slide the AirPods Max into the Smart Case and wait 30 minutes
  • Or, if you don’t have the Smart Case with you, do not touch your AirPods Max for 30 minutes
